TOP ARAB AND JEWISH ARTISTS SLATED FOR 9/11 CONCERT, "MUSICIANS FOR PEACE"
A pop rock Muslim fusion artist, a Persian-meets-funk singer, a Klezmer ensemble, Israeli jazz musicians, and New York folk artists will participate in a free concert on 9/11 entitled "Musicians for Peace - Jews and Arabs Making Music Together."
Co-sponsored by The New York Society for Ethical Culture and The Tikkun Community of New York, the event is part of a citywide series of concerts, "The September Concert," organized to honor the spirit of America's heroes and victims of 9/11, and celebrate America's courage and fortitude. The concert will take place on Wednesday, 9/11, at 7 p.m., at the Ethical Culture Meeting House, 2 West 64th Street in Manhattan.
The program will feature a special performance by Hassan Hakmoun. Mr. Hakmoun is known for fusing native Gnawa music with western pop and funk. This "rising force in World music" (NY Times) has collaborated with many of today's popular artists, including Peter Gabriel and his ex-wife, Paula Cole. Other featured performers include Frank London of the Klezmatics; The Aaron Goldberg Quartet; Gilad, a world music percussionist, and friends; Elizabeth Hunter, a spiritual-passion singer-songwriter and member of NAPM/Songwriter Hall of Fame; Ilene Weiss, a New York folk artist; and Haale, a Persian singer. Jean Somerville Kotkin, an Ethical Culture Leader, will greet the audience, and Tim Hunter, concert organizer, will serve as emcee for the evening.
According to Mr. Hunter, "Since September 11, we as a nation have had to face so much sorrow. We decided to have this concert to say we may not have all the answers, but let's start by affirming 'we will not be enemies.'"
